What is trigger finger?

Trigger finger, otherwise known as stenosing flexor tenosynovitis, is caused by inflammation on the flexor tendon that decreases its ability to glide while within its tunnel (tendon sheath). Patients feel their finger 'catches' or 'locks' when they try to bend it. Some patients have pain or a nodule in their palm.

Very common in the general population, however risk factors include:
  • Diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Repeated gripping activities

How can we treat trigger finger?

Depending on symptom severity, different options are possible:
  • Tendon gliding exercises, nighttime splinting and referral to a hand therapists.
  • Anti-inflammatories.
  • Cortisone injection (offered on the same day of your appointment if indicated)
  • Trigger finger release
A surgery done under local anesthesia through a very small incision in your palm.
    Incision heals within 1-2 weeks.
Return to pain-free activities and improved function achieved in a few weeks by most patients.
